No one influenced me more than Sister Anselma! We had our first “musical” in 1969…the Wizard of Oz. I recall Sister Kateri, Sister Mary Victor, Sister Eustace, Sister Dorothea, Sister Henry, Sister Emmanuella, Sister Augustine, Sister Augustus, Sister Joanne, and Sister Anselma. I loved Sister Athanasius for Religion and Home Ec. The IHM’s were very progressive and open minded.ĭespite being an out of towner and feeling pretty inferior to many of my classmates, I began to take many risks, joining student council, doing well in French and encouraged by Sister Salvatore Cramer. Although most of my new classmates were from the rather wealthy towns around the school, I learned to find my way around socially and began to find myself as being a vibrant, spiritual young girl. I spent my elementary school years staying under the radar, getting good grades but staying out of the way of the frightening nuns I had then.īut my IHM Sisters at Saint Mary’s often shocked me with their laughter, authenticity and their kindness. Currently, I’m working as a Quality Control Manager the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research in Frederick, Maryland. Fast forward 20 years later and I wouldn't be where I am without Sister Rose being in my life. When I look back on it, in our meetings, she walked me through a flow chart of steps to take to stick with Biotechnology without being discouraged such as applying for private tutoring along with changing my study habits. Sister Rose was the only person who did not suggest doing that. Everyone around me strongly recommended me to change my major. I met with Sister Rose every week to discuss my goals and how I could get through the obstacles I was facing. I felt uncertain and anxious about my future. I struggled with the demanding curriculum for the science program. However, reality struck hard when I was put on academic probation after finishing the first semester. I started classes for my major in Biotechnology in the fall of the same year. ![]() Sister Rose was my counselor for the ACT101 program.
